Tropical Depression Querubin has weakened into a low-pressure area (LPA) as of Wednesday afternoon. Despite this downgrade, heavy to intense rainfall remains likely over parts of the Visayas and Mindanao on Thursday, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
Weather specialist Daniel James Villamil emphasized that the LPA will continue to bring rains to the eastern sections of Visayas and Mindanao.
“The system’s trough, or extension, is expected to cause cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms across the rest of Visayas and Mindanao,” Villamil explained.
In its 5 p.m. weather advisory on Wednesday, Pagasa warned of heavy to intense rainfall particularly affecting the provinces of Sorsogon, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Biliran, Dinagat Islands, and Surigao del Norte.
These rainfall levels may lead to flooding and landslides in areas deemed moderately to highly susceptible, Pagasa added.
As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, the LPA was located 275 kilometers east of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte. Pagasa predicts that from Thursday to Sunday, the LPA will traverse Mindanao, move toward the Sulu Sea, and eventually approach Palawan.
Residents in affected areas are advised to remain vigilant, monitor updates from Pagasa, and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during periods of heavy rainfall.
