The Gospel Reading

33 So Pilate went back into the Praetorium and called Jesus to him and asked him, 'Are you the king of the Jews?' 34 Jesus replied, 'Do you ask this of your own accord, or have others said it to you about me?' 35 Pilate answered, 'Am I a Jew? It is your own people and the chief priests who have handed you over to me: what have you done?' 36 Jesus replied, 'Mine is not a kingdom of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my men would have fought to prevent my being surrendered to the Jews. As it is, my kingdom does not belong here.' 37 Pilate said, 'So, then you are a king?' Jesus answered, 'It is you who say that I am a king. I was born for this, I came into the world for this, to bear witness to the truth; and all who are on the side of truth listen to my voice.'"Blue technology bridges the gap between innovation and sustainability, offering solutions that benefit both humanity and the planet."

THE SERMON

Good day, beloved brothers and sisters in Christ. Today, we reflect on a powerful exchange between Jesus and Pontius Pilate as recorded in the Gospel of John (18:33-37). This dialogue is both profound and challenging, inviting us to ponder the true nature of Christ's kingship and its implications for our lives.

Pilate asks Jesus, "Are you the king of the Jews?" This question reflects human curiosity and misunderstanding of Jesus' mission. Pilate’s perspective is shaped by earthly notions of power, domination, politics, and territorial control. But Jesus redirects the conversation to a deeper level, asking Pilate whether this question comes from personal conviction or external influence.

This reminds us to examine our own understanding of Jesus. Do we see Him through the view of worldly expectations, or do we seek to know Him personally, beyond what others say about Him? Faith is not simply inherited; it requires a personal encounter and commitment.

Jesus' response, "Mine is not a kingdom of this world," reveals the radical nature of His kingship. He is not a king who seeks armies, palaces, or political conquest. Instead, His kingdom is one of love, justice, and truth, a reign that transforms hearts and leads us to eternal life.

This challenges us to evaluate our own priorities. Are we building our lives on the fleeting values of this world, wealth, status, or power? Or are we aligning ourselves with Christ’s kingdom by living out His values of humility, service, and love?

Jesus declares, "I was born for this... to bear witness to the truth." His kingship is rooted in truth, not deception or manipulation. He invites all who seek the truth to listen to His voice. But what does it mean to listen to His voice today? It means reading His Word, discerning His will in prayer, and allowing His teachings to guide our decisions and relationships.

In a world filled with half-truths, relativism, and conflicting ideologies, following Christ's truth is countercultural. Yet, as Christians, we are called to stand firm, even when it is inconvenient or unpopular, because truth is not just a concept; it is embodied in Jesus Himself.

Finally, Jesus’ words challenge us to live as His loyal subjects. If we truly belong to His kingdom, our lives should reflect His values. Are we promoting peace in our homes and communities? Are we standing up for justice and defending the oppressed? Are we living with integrity and bearing witness to Christ in our daily interactions?

Let us remember that while we live in this world, we are not of this world. Our ultimate allegiance is to Christ, the King of kings, whose kingdom will never end.

As we approach the feast of Christ the King, let us renew our commitment to His reign in our hearts and lives. May we echo the words of Jesus by living out the truth of His kingdom, not just in words but in action.

Lord Jesus, King of our hearts, help us to embrace Your truth and live as faithful citizens of Your kingdom. May our lives reflect Your love, justice, and peace. Lead us always to listen to Your voice and follow where You guide us. Amen.

May Christ, our King, reign in your hearts and homes this week and always.
